Nonprofit audit and assurance services

The right level of assurance depends on your funders, your board and the rules that apply to your organization.

01

Financial statement audits.

Audits of GAAP financial statements for not-for-profit organizations, for boards, grantors, lenders and regulators.

02

Reviews.

Limited assurance at a lower cost when a full audit isn't required by your funders or regulators.

03

Agreed-upon procedures.

Targeted procedures on specific accounts, grants or compliance requirements.

04

Single Audits (Uniform Guidance).

Compliance audits for organizations that spend $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year beginning on or after October 1, 2024.

05

California audit requirement.

California charities with gross revenue of $2 million or more generally must have audited financial statements.

06

Board and audit committee communication.

Clear findings and recommendations on internal controls, financial language and best practices.

Getting ready for your first audit?

We know what separates a smooth audit from a painful one: accrual-basis books, a clean chart of accounts, documented internal controls and properly classified restricted funds. Organizations that need help getting there can work with our nonprofit accounting team, with your audit performed by an independent firm.

Cleanup & audit readiness.

Conversion to accrual, chart of accounts cleanup and controls, before your first audit.

Grant reconciliation.

Grant activity reconciled and drawdowns documented for Single Audit testing.

Support for your auditor.

Schedules and support your auditor needs, prepared on time.

Independence matters: we do not perform audits, reviews or other attestation work for our accounting clients. If we provide your accounting, we'll prepare you for and coordinate with an independent audit firm. If we're your auditor, we can recommend outside accounting support.

Real people with life-changing results

“I have worked with Rood & Dinis for 21 years and can highly recommend their services as they have an excellent understanding of nonprofit reporting, compliance, and business issues and because they communicate complicated concepts in simple terms I can understand. I am confident they understand both the big picture view and the small details of the nonprofit organizations I represent.”

Frequently asked questions

Have a question that isn't answered here? Contact our team.

Does our nonprofit need an audit or a review?

–

It depends on your funders, grant agreements, federal award spending and California rules. We'll help you decide what's required and what's worth doing.

When is a Single Audit required?

–

Generally when a nonprofit spends $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year beginning on or after October 1, 2024 ($750,000 for earlier years).

Can you audit us and keep our books?

–

No. We do not perform audit or attestation work for our accounting clients. We can keep your books and help you prepare for an independent auditor, or serve as your auditor.

How long does an audit take?

–

Timing depends on each audit. We build our audit schedule well in advance and assign your team to a specific start date. Our client service team handles scheduling and up-front coordination, then our auditors take it from there, on site or virtually. We ask that your organization be ready for the agreed timetable, since delays can occur otherwise. Once fieldwork begins, we work with you to wrap up effectively and keep you updated as we progress.
